Read Through

A Read-Through Report comes in two types: Book-to-Book and Cumulative.
A Book-to-Book Report tells you the percentage of readers who moved on from one book to the next, usually within a series. A Cumulative Report tells you the percentage of people who started the series and then read all the way through. This tool enables you to determine both.
The more data used to calculate this report the better as it smooths out any anomalies that occur due to advertising or free book giveaways. Read-Through and Cumulative Read-Through are both measured in UNITS and presented as a percentage.
*A Read-Through report cannot be done unless you have first created a series in the ScribeCount Bookshelf page AND placed the books within that series in their proper order. Instructions on how to do so can be found here.
The formula for a Book-to-Book calculation looks like this:
Book-to-Book Read-Through =  (Book 2 Units/Book 1 Units) x 100. This is expressed as a percentage.
A good Read-Through report has an increasing rate throughout the series. If a Read-Through rate drops to less than 50% that is a warning sign of a failing series. Ideally the rate starts at 70% or greater and climbs steadily from that point on. If a series is enrolled in Kindle Unlimited, you can do a similar calculation for page-reads. Since Kindle Unlimited readers tend to be voracious and are borrowing books rather than buying them, you would expect to see a higher read-through rate as an indication of a healthy series. Free-First-In-Series books are factored in with the calculation started on book two. For measuring Sell-Through for Box-Sets it’s best to create them in a separate series.
To see how Sell-Through Reports work in conjunction with Return-On-Investment reports see the ROI Instructions.
The formula for a Cumulative Read-Through calculation looks like this:
Cumulative Read-Through = (last book units/first book units) x 100. This is also expressed as a percentage.
Example: If 182 people read the first book in the series, and 122 read the last book, the calculation would look like this: 122/182 x 100 = 67%
67% percent of the readers who started this series finished it.
These reports provide valuable information about your readers and how motivated they are to move on to the next book you have written. Questions such as “Where do readers leave my series?” “Where are the weak points in my storyline?” “Where do I need to focus or adjust my advertising for this series?” can all be quickly answered with a Read-Through report.
