BookFunnel for Direct Sales — Ebook and Audiobook Delivery
When a reader buys an ebook from your Shopify store or Payhip page, two things need to happen immediately: they need to receive the file, and they need to be able to open it on their device without friction. These sound simple. In practice, they're the two most common points of failure in a direct sales operation — either the delivery mechanism breaks, or the reader gets the file and can't figure out how to open it on their Kindle or Kobo.
BookFunnel solves both problems. It hosts your ebook and audiobook files, generates secure download links, sends branded delivery emails when a purchase triggers, and provides reader support for device and compatibility questions — all without you being in the loop. A reader who can't get your ebook onto their Kindle clicks the help link in their delivery email and gets BookFunnel's support team, not your inbox.
BookFunnel is not a storefront and doesn't process payments. It does everything that happens after the purchase — delivery, device compatibility, reader support, and tracking. For most authors running a direct sales operation, it's an essential layer of the stack.
What BookFunnel Actually Does
You upload your ebook file (ePub, MOBI, and/or PDF) to BookFunnel and configure how it should be delivered. BookFunnel generates a download campaign — a branded page where readers access their file, select their device, and follow device-specific instructions for getting the book onto their reader. The 'Send to Kindle' button and the 'Send to Kobo' button on BookFunnel's download page are the features that eliminate most reader support questions before they become support tickets.
Every delivery is tracked by email address and checkout source. You can see who claimed a book and when, identify unclaimed purchases, and resend access to specific buyers. For a launch where you're selling to hundreds of readers in a short window, this visibility matters — you can identify delivery problems before readers report them.
Download links can be configured with expiration dates and download limits. These are useful for launch bonuses (a download link that expires after 7 days creates a real reason to act) and for controlling access to advance review copies without risking unlimited distribution of unreleased files.
BookFunnel and Your Store — How the Connection Works
With Shopify
BookFunnel does not have a native app in the Shopify App Store. The connection runs through Zapier or through Sky Pilot's webhook functionality if you're using Sky Pilot for delivery. The Zapier route is the most common:
Create your BookFunnel download campaign for each ebook product
In Zapier, set a trigger: 'New paid order in Shopify'
Filter by the product tag or SKU that corresponds to that ebook
Set the action: 'Fulfill order in BookFunnel' — which sends the delivery email to the buyer
This sounds more complex than it is. Once it's configured for one product, duplicating it for additional products takes minutes. The connection is reliable and runs automatically — a reader completes a purchase, Shopify notifies Zapier, Zapier triggers BookFunnel, BookFunnel emails the reader. The whole sequence happens in under a minute.
For bundles — an ebook plus audiobook, or three books in a series sold together — BookFunnel's multi-book delivery pages let you configure a single download page that includes all files in the bundle. One purchase, one delivery email, one page with everything the reader bought.
⚠ Test your Zapier connection with a real purchase before sending your email list to your store. Place a test order using a personal email address, verify the delivery email arrives, and confirm the download link works. Do this for every product before launch — a broken delivery automation on launch day affects every buyer simultaneously.
With Payhip
Payhip has its own native digital delivery system — when a reader buys your ebook from Payhip, Payhip delivers the file directly from its own infrastructure without requiring BookFunnel. For straightforward ebook delivery, this works fine.
BookFunnel becomes valuable on Payhip when you want BookFunnel's device-specific delivery experience (particularly the 'Send to Kindle' functionality), when you're delivering audiobooks (Payhip doesn't support audiobook delivery natively), or when you want your reader list and delivery tracking centralized in BookFunnel regardless of which storefront the purchase came through. Connect Payhip to BookFunnel via Zapier using the same webhook approach as Shopify.
With WooCommerce
The WooCommerce connection mirrors the Shopify approach: Zapier watches for completed WooCommerce orders and triggers the corresponding BookFunnel delivery campaign. WordPress plugins like Uncanny Automator and WP Webhooks can handle this without leaving WordPress if you prefer to avoid a Zapier dependency. The Zapier route is more reliable for most authors because it doesn't introduce a WordPress plugin compatibility variable.
Reader Magnets and Lead Capture
BookFunnel's most widely used feature — possibly more widely used than paid delivery — is reader magnet delivery. A reader magnet is a free ebook (typically a short story, novella, or first-in-series novel) that you offer in exchange for a reader's email address. BookFunnel hosts the landing page for the exchange, handles the download, and connects directly to your email platform to add the new subscriber to your list.
The reader magnet workflow: you create a BookFunnel landing page for your free book, configure it to require an email address before download, and connect your email platform (ScribeCount Email, MailerLite, Klaviyo, ConvertKit, or most others). When a reader downloads your free book, their email address is automatically added to your list and can trigger a welcome sequence. You share the BookFunnel landing page URL on your social media, in your back matter, in your author bio on retail platforms, and anywhere else you're directing readers.
The reader magnet is the most important single tool in building your direct sales audience. Every reader who downloads your free book becomes an email subscriber. Every email subscriber is a potential direct buyer. The funnel from reader magnet to direct store purchase is the foundation of most successful indie author direct sales businesses — and BookFunnel is the infrastructure that makes it run automatically.
Email integration for reader magnets requires the Direct Integration add-on on BookFunnel's Mid-List plan ($50/year extra, making the effective cost $150/year for Mid-List with integration). The Bestseller plan includes integration. For authors whose reader magnet is actively building their list, the integration add-on is worth it immediately — manually adding subscribers from a spreadsheet export is not a sustainable workflow.
The reader magnet strategy and the email sequences that follow it are covered in detail in the Email section of this library. What matters here is that BookFunnel is the delivery and capture layer — it's where the free book goes and where the email address comes from.
Audiobook Delivery
BookFunnel Audio supports direct audiobook delivery in two formats: file download (the listener downloads the MP3 files and plays them in any audio app) and streaming via BookFunnel's own audiobook app (the listener streams directly without downloading files). The streaming app supports bookmarks, playback speed control, chapter navigation, and background playback — the features listeners expect from any audiobook app.
Audiobook delivery is the most significant capability that separates BookFunnel from simpler delivery tools. If you are selling audiobooks directly — either titles produced independently or through ACX under non-exclusive terms — BookFunnel is essentially the only clean solution for managing that delivery at author scale. Payhip doesn't support audiobook streaming. Sky Pilot doesn't support it. BookFunnel does.
The margin math on direct audiobook sales is compelling. Audible pays 25-40% royalties depending on exclusivity. A $14.99 audiobook sold through your direct store via BookFunnel Audio earns approximately $14.50 after payment processing — versus $3.75-$6.00 through Audible. The operational requirement is that your audiobook files exist outside of an exclusive ACX contract. Authors who produced their audio with a flat-fee narrator (rather than royalty share) and distributed non-exclusively through ACX have full rights to sell direct.
⚠ ACX royalty share contracts require exclusivity for the term of the agreement. If your audiobook was produced through a royalty share arrangement, you cannot sell it directly through BookFunnel Audio until the exclusivity period expires or is renegotiated. Check your ACX contract terms before setting up audiobook direct sales.
As of February 2026, BookFunnel updated its audiobook pricing to a usage-based model separate from the base plan — audiobook delivery costs are now metered on hours delivered rather than included in a flat plan tier. Check BookFunnel's current audiobook pricing at bookfunnel.com/pricing before projecting costs, as the specific rates depend on your delivery volume.
BookFunnel Pricing — 2026 Structure
BookFunnel updated its pricing in February 2026. Existing customers can remain on their prior plan indefinitely. New accounts use the updated structure:

1 pen name; basic ebook delivery; no email integration; 500 downloads/month; no direct sales delivery — entry point for testing the platform |
|

$100/year |
Multiple pen names; 5,000 downloads/month; direct sales delivery; reader magnet campaigns; group promos |

For most authors running an active direct sales store, Mid-List + Direct Integration at $150/year is the correct plan. The email integration is not optional if you're using BookFunnel for reader magnets — manually managing subscriber exports is not a real workflow. The $150/year cost is among the most cost-efficient tools in a direct sales stack relative to what it delivers.
What BookFunnel Doesn't Do
BookFunnel is not a storefront. It doesn't display your books for browsing, doesn't process payments, and doesn't serve as the primary interface readers use to find and purchase your work. It is purely post-purchase infrastructure. Your store (Shopify, Payhip, WooCommerce) handles discovery and payment. BookFunnel handles delivery.
BookFunnel also doesn't replace your email platform. It integrates with your email platform and adds subscribers to lists, but the email sequences, newsletters, promotional campaigns, and reader relationship management live in your email platform — ScribeCount Email, MailerLite, Klaviyo, or whichever you use. The Email section of this library covers that layer.
And BookFunnel doesn't replace AuthorVault as your catalog record. Your titles, ISBNs, formats, and pricing live in AuthorVault in the ScribeCount Author OS. BookFunnel holds the files for delivery. The distinction matters when you're updating a title — you update the metadata in AuthorVault, the retail listings on each platform, and the files in BookFunnel separately. They're connected in your workflow but not the same system.
Group Promos — The Discovery Feature Most Authors Underuse
BookFunnel runs group promotions — coordinated events where multiple authors offer free or discounted books through a shared BookFunnel landing page. Readers browse the page, download books from multiple authors, and each download adds the reader to that author's email list. For authors with small lists who are actively trying to grow their reader base, group promos are one of the most effective free reader acquisition tools available.
Group promos are organized by genre and run on a schedule that BookFunnel coordinates. You apply to participate with a qualifying book (typically a reader magnet or first-in-series) and agree to promote the promo to your own list. In exchange, you receive downloads from other participants' lists. The cross-promotion math works in everyone's favor when participants have roughly comparable list sizes.
Access to group promos requires the Mid-List plan or above. This is one of the specific reasons the First-Time Author plan at $30/year is insufficient for most authors actively building their direct sales business — group promos are a core growth mechanism, not a premium feature.
ScribeCount Integration
BookFunnel connects to the ScribeCount Author OS primarily through its email integration with ScribeCount Email. When a reader downloads your book through BookFunnel, they're added to your ScribeCount Email list and can be tagged by which book they downloaded, which campaign delivered it, and when. This data feeds into the reader segments that drive your direct sales promotions.
The ScribeCount Sales Dashboard tracks your direct store revenue from Shopify, Payhip, and WooCommerce. BookFunnel's delivery data — who downloaded what and when — complements this by showing the reader acquisition side of the funnel. Revenue in the Sales Dashboard, reader acquisition in BookFunnel's campaign tracking, email behavior in ScribeCount Email: these three data points together give you the full picture of how your direct sales operation is performing.
Common BookFunnel Setup Mistakes
Not testing the Zapier/webhook connection before launch — a broken automation affects every buyer simultaneously
Using the First-Time Author plan ($30/year) for an active direct sales store — it doesn't include direct sales delivery or group promos
Not adding the Direct Integration add-on when using BookFunnel for reader magnets — manual subscriber management is not sustainable
Assuming BookFunnel Audio is included in the base plan — audiobook delivery is now a separate usage-based add-on as of February 2026
Setting up ACX royalty share audiobooks for BookFunnel Audio without checking exclusivity terms — exclusive ACX contracts prohibit direct delivery
Not using group promos — the most effective free reader acquisition tool on the platform, available to all Mid-List and above subscribers
BookFunnel is infrastructure. You set it up once, connect it to your store and email platform, test it, and then it runs in the background on every sale you make. The reader gets a clean delivery experience. You get the subscriber. The support questions go to BookFunnel, not you. At $150/year with integration, it's one of the clearest value propositions in an author's direct sales stack.
