My KDP Royalties Look Wrong — Understanding Delays, Gaps, and Dashboard Quirks

KDP's reporting system has a lot of moving parts — and the gaps between selling a book, seeing the sale, and receiving the money are longer and less transparent than most authors expect. Here's what's actually happening.

Difficulty: Beginner-friendly

Time to Fix: Understanding only — most delays resolve automatically within 72 hours

Platforms Affected: Amazon KDP — ebook, print, and Kindle Unlimited

Best For: Authors confused about why their dashboard shows different numbers at different times, why sales seem to disappear, or why payment hasn't arrived when expected.

The KDP Reporting Timeline — Why Your Numbers Lag

Amazon does not report sales in real time. The KDP dashboard typically shows ebook sales within 24–48 hours of the transaction. Print book sales take longer — often 48–72 hours. Kindle Unlimited (KU) page reads are reported within 24 hours but update overnight rather than continuously.

Amazon India, Amazon Australia, and a few smaller international marketplaces often lag behind the main marketplaces by an additional 24–48 hours. If you see sales in your US and UK dashboards but the international numbers seem slow, this is normal.

💡 TIP:  Don't check your KDP dashboard every hour. The data isn't updating that frequently, and the refresh rate doesn't match the anxiety it creates. A once-daily check at the same time each day gives you more useful trend data.

Understanding the Dashboard Numbers

'Units Sold' vs. 'Units Ordered'

KDP shows 'Units Ordered' in real time — this is the number of orders placed. 'Units Sold' (used for royalty calculations) may differ slightly because Amazon accounts for returns, cancellations, and processing. The delta is usually small but can be confusing when the two numbers don't match.

Why KU Page Reads Don't Add Up to What You Expected

Kindle Unlimited royalties are calculated from a global pool that changes monthly. KDP multiplies your page reads by the current KENP (Kindle Edition Normalized Pages) rate — which varies month to month and is not announced in advance. The rate is typically around $0.004–$0.005 per page read, but this fluctuates. You cannot calculate your KU income until the month is complete and Amazon publishes the rate.

Print Books — The Expanded Distribution Delay

If you use KDP's Expanded Distribution (which sends your print book to libraries, bookstores, and other retailers via Ingram), those sales are not reported through the KDP dashboard. They appear in a separate report under 'Expanded Distribution' and arrive with a significantly longer lag — often 30–60 days after the sale.

⚠️ WARNING:  Expanded Distribution sales are paid out approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which they occur — much later than direct Amazon sales. Plan your cash flow expectations accordingly.

Missing Sales That Were Reported

Occasionally, sales that appeared in your dashboard disappear. This happens when Amazon processes a return or cancellation. If a reader orders your book and returns it within the return window (30 days for print, 7 days for ebooks), the sale is reversed. This is normal and happens to every author.

Understanding KDP Payments

KDP pays royalties approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which the sales occurred. Ebook and print sales from January are paid at the end of March. This two-month lag is baked into the system.

Before you receive payment, you must meet the payment threshold — typically $100 for electronic payment (direct deposit or bank transfer). If your royalties for a month are below this threshold, they carry over to the next month.

Tax withholding affects payments for non-US authors. If you are outside the US and have not completed the W-8 tax interview in KDP, Amazon withholds up to 30% of your royalties. Completing the W-8 form — which is straightforward even for non-US authors — typically reduces this withholding significantly.

  1. Log into KDP and navigate to 'My Account' > 'Tax Information'

  2. Click 'Interview' and complete the W-8BEN form (for non-US authors) or W-9 (for US authors)

  3. Verify your bank account details in 'Payment Information' — even a single wrong digit delays payment

  4. Check the 'Payment Threshold' setting and adjust it if you want to receive payment at a lower balance

When to Actually Contact KDP Support

Most royalty discrepancies resolve themselves within the normal reporting timeline. Contact KDP support if: you haven't received payment 90 days after the month in question, your payment information shows no errors but payment hasn't arrived, or you believe you are being withheld amounts that your completed tax forms should have eliminated.

💡 TIP:  Before contacting support, take a screenshot of your payment history showing the expected payment date and the current status. This dramatically speeds up the support conversation.

How ScribeCount Helps

KDP's own reporting is fragmented — ebooks in one view, print in another, Expanded Distribution in a third. ScribeCount consolidates all of your KDP income streams into a single dashboard alongside your other platforms, eliminating the dashboard-switching that makes KDP royalty tracking so tedious. The 60-day payment lag means ScribeCount's historical data is often more useful than the live dashboard for understanding your actual income trajectory.
